Day/night cameras are an important part of most video surveillance systems. Day/night IP cameras will automatically switch to recording in black and white in low light conditions and then switch back to recording in color when enough light is present. There are often two lux ratings for low light sensitivity, one for color and one for black and white. All day/night cameras still require some light. This could be ambient light from the stars, moon, and lights that are far away, or the light could be provided by exterior sources such as street lamps, flood lights, or interior lights.
Light could also be provided by IR illumination, either from an external IR illuminator mounted near the camera or built-in IR LEDs on the camera. IR light is invisible to the naked eye. Because of the cost-savings and ease of use, day/night bullet and dome cameras with built-in IR LEDs are the most popular type of day/night IP camera.
